Sifu Juergen Harlander
Juergen Harlander

My name is Juergen Harlander (Chinese name Hajukan). I was born in 1973 in Germany and have trained different martial arts since I was 9 years old. This includes Taekwondo, Thaiboxing, BJJ and Arnis. When I was 16 years old I was introduced to Wing Chun in Germany, but at that time I was focused on training Thaiboxing and Thaicompetitions. My friend, who introduced me to Wing Chun died in an accident two years after and in order to honour him, I started training Wing Chun and searched for different Wing Chun Masters in Germany, who had good Wing Chun fighting skills. I found one master in Germany who I followed until I was 30 years old.

At the age of 29 I got cancer and after Chemotherapy and different other treatments I promised myself I will do something useful in my life and not only making money with my company. I decided to travel to Hong Kong and China at the age of 30 to experience the different Wing Chun Masters and their skills in order to compare them with my own level in Wing Chun. I found myself not too bad until I knocked on the door of Sifu Wan Kam Leung’s school. He destroyed my Wing Chun confidence totally in 5 minutes. I felt then, I knew nothing about bodystructure, timing and concept. It was painful to aknowledge that, but at the same time it was an eyeopener and amazing to be able to experience this kind of skills from a master, especially at this age.

Back then I already had over 150 streetfights, undergroundfights and many other competitionfights. But after my meeting with Sifu Wan I decided to start all over in order to learn Practical Wing Chun directly under him. Since then I have travelled to Hong Kong twice every year for couple of months and a whole year in 2006. During this time I have taking private lessons every day and training full time in the evenings (7 – 8 hours a day). I have become the first non-chinese instructor at the Headquarter in Hong Kong in 2006 and also the first non-chinese student who has learnt the whole system including Qigong.

Still today (2010) I am amazed everytime I see Sifu Wan Kam Leung in action. He is the inspiration in my life and the only one who still surprises me every day.
